Since 1444 to the end of the 1950s, a small number of young black female dancers and jazz singers broke with prevailing black community norms and wore unstraightened hair. All this brought misconception that natural hair is “dirty”. The second is that natural hair does/doesn’t grow (hence the obsession with hair length, hair extensions and dreadlocks).

Many black women and men who wear weaves and relax their hair will explain their choice by either saying that their natural hair is “unmanageable”. This is one of the most enduring stereotypes about black hair. People will even cite the “anecdotal” evidence that Bob Marley’s dreads had 47 different types of lice when he died. These are urban legends of the worst kind because they perpetuate the stereotype that only black hair attracts lice, and other vermin, which is simply. Learning about our own hair will build us as black people.

I thought it would be a good time to raise the awareness of the “hair issues” African Americans have had over the years due to our past. These issues have affected, whether we like it or not, more than just our hair esteem, but in the words of writer Karsten Ivey in an article he wrote called Combing the history of black hair, “It’s about self-esteem, identity, politics, economics, history and race. “Let’s join and begin changing society’s view of Black Beauty. Let’s join to take back our definition of beauty in our hair, skin colour, and culture. Let’s do this for our kids and generations to come. Throw away the hate and learn to Love Our Thirsty Roots! Loving on our hair, simple means to educate ourselves about how to properly take care of and maintain healthy hair. Our hair can grow so much as long we take care of it, please look on this picture they where taken many years ago and there hair was long. We can do this , it is time to love who we are.
